Bernadette Curtin: 'Forecast'

15th of October to 6th of November 2010

Since moving to Byron Bay four years ago, Bernadette Curtin has extended previous themes begun in Melbourne.

In her new series , she painted directly from observations of the changing and dramatic weather patterns of our area. The title chosen, Forecast, also refers to the times we are now experiencing, as if the paintings were not only about her present environment but, in a wider context, sounding out the future.
”The paintings are my responses to this lush environment, says Bernie, and the water cycle is a continuing theme in them. I enjoy rendering water in all its forms –the translucency of raindrops, the ephemeral nature of clouds, the flow of rivers and ocean tides. Weather and the incredible downpours of rain, storms with their amazing cloud formations and dramatic lighting effects that we enjoy here are recorded through different seasons."

Forecast was opened by Candida Baker, director of the Writers Festival and run until November 6th.

Sheri Piccone: T...RUST - finding inspiration beneath the surface, amongst the rust and remnants,
Solo Exhibition
26/02/10 to 20/03/10

With impetus drawn from the Art Postcards that she entered into last year's "Wish You Were Here" exhibition at Waywood Gallery, Sheri has created a whole body of work for her first solo exhibition.
Allowing the found objects and other fragments to relate their stories through her, whilst simultaneously building new narratives for the viewer.Inspired by life and it's unfolding journeys, the artwork of Sheri Piccone talks about letting go of the past and surrendering to the now, of memories that fade, tatter and rust and of how, when one doorway closes, another opens. Insights drawn from books, music and life are tools of salvation. Scattered through the works these fragments represent keys to transformation, treasures of the heart and freedom from the mind. The works are inspired by love and trust.... lost, found and that which just is.

The artworks combine found objects, altered books, symbols, materials, images and text juxtaposed to create a series of memorable collages and assemblages in the exhibition titled “t...rust”.

You will head into the wilds of Byron Shire’s own wetlands in search of the elusive, with the world’s leading Artomologist as tour guide. Jane will encourage you to get ‘down and dirty’ in search of interesting subjects.

‘Dealing with subject matter that is afraid of you, lends a whole new meaning to the word patience!’ says Jane.  Jane will reveal some of her secrets learned from countless hours spent stalking the tiniest of game.

In a move away from grabbing snapshots participants will learn how to approach ‘bugjects’ and capture images that express the real beauty of the moment. Participants will learn the essential tools of editing as well as being encouraged to dip into the great pool of digital mastery.

NITZA FLANTZ-KARPEL: Verses in Air

27th July - 18th August 2007
an exhibition of
paper reliefs & sculptures

“For the ‘life model’ of my works I take the forms of ancient Hebrew verses, from psalms and prayers as they appear in the traditional formats of printed scriptures or prayer books that for centuries have been used to express feelings of men who read from them daily.
I take the forms and denude them of their verbal content but not of their accumulated emotional content, my sense of which guides the way I take the forms apart and then reassemble them, stitching – a traditionally feminine craft – the torn leaves of two-dimensionality into three-dimensional reliefs or sculptures, verses in air.” Nitza Flantz-Karpel

This ancillary exhibition gave the local community an opportunity to identify and applaud the visual and intellectual strengths of our young talents. School tours are obviously most welcome too.

VENTURELAND, a Dynamic Drawing Class exhibition

28th April - 12th May 2007

The Crashing Doors Exhibition

Mixed-media works by
Jackie Babbage, Svea Lucia Björnsson, Susie Brockhoff,
Liam Bruce, Robbie Curtain, Scott Dall, Carmen Hogue,
David Horner, Sally McDonald, Liz McLeod, Cleis Pearce, Gaily Russell, Debra Simpson, Kaye Wearne.

“The mixed-media works in this show represent some of the strongest, most consistent work to have emerged from Dynamic Drawing classes in the recent period. They were chosen for their authentic use of visual language and their striking originality. Drawing is a philosophy, not a craft and the classes have provided a forum for the full-bodied translation of experience into compelling and intimate realities. At the centre of good work is something unpredictable and risky; or even what could be seen as raw and ragged. Some will find it confronting, challenging and different; a lumberjack to the sensibilities. These works are not institutionalised nor are they trade-offs or commodities. We have tried to do art, not furnish a boutique.
This exhibition represents a considerable journey and a significant commitment for those involved. Some of the work has the crash sound of real change.”
